How to determine the success of cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Author:ADA MED SUPPLY LIMITED

Whether cardiopulmonary resuscitation is successful is mainly determined by observing the patient's vital signs and the recovery of circulation.

Firstly, if the patient's spontaneous breathing gradually recovers, the breathing rate changes from irregular to regular, and the undulation of the chest can be seen, this is an important sign.

Secondly, the recurrence of carotid or femoral artery pulsation and the gradual stabilization of heart rate indicate the recovery of circulatory function.

At the same time, the patient's complexion changes from pale and cyanotic to rosy, and the skin temperature rises, which is also a sign of effective resuscitation. If the pupil gradually shrinks from dilation after resuscitation and the light reflex resumes, it indicates an improvement in blood supply to the brain.

Clinically, the ultimate goal of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is to achieve the restoration of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), that is, the patient's heart can pump blood on its own and maintain effective blood pressure without relying on external chest compressions and artificial ventilation. If continuous monitoring reveals an increase in blood pressure, an effective heart rhythm shown on the electrocardiogram, and consciousness gradually recovers, it can be basically determined that the resuscitation is successful.
